Guaraná Paquera foi uma performance de um ano encenada no Instagram, construída a partir de uma série de imagens, vídeos, found texts e notas compartilhados nos stories da plataforma. Após se submeter a uma cirurgia plástica, a artista se propôs a investigar os modos de identificação associados à face humana. Assumindo o rosto como uma ficção que direciona através da palavra modos de viver, ela mergulhou, durante o ano de 2023, em um ciclo infindável de busca pelo “autoaperfeiçoamento”, estimulado pelos espectadores que consumiam o corpo e a vida da artista que viam online.
Para reconstruir sua identidade, criando uma nova versão de si mesma baseada em quem já era, a artista assumiu a comodificação de seu corpo e sua imagem, aqui estrategicamente performada. Assim, passou a fotografar o dia a dia, postar nas redes sociais e, de acordo com a dinâmica do Instagram, uma plataforma de produção de imagens sujeitas ao ethos neoliberal de produtividade e consumo, interagir com seus seguidores. A documentação da performance resultou em um exercício experimental de escrita em forma de site, disponível online entre novembro de 2023 e abril de 2024.

Guaraná Paquera was a year-long performance staged on Instagram, built from a series of images, videos, found texts, and notes shared through the platform’s stories. After undergoing plastic surgery, the artist set out to investigate the modes of identification associated with the human face. Conceiving the face as a fiction that shapes ways of living through language, she immersed herself throughout 2023 in an endless cycle of “self-improvement,” fueled by spectators consuming the artist's body and life online.
To reconstruct her identity, creating a new version of herself based on who she already was, she embraced the commodification of her body and image, strategically performed here. Thus, the artist committed to photographing her daily life, posting on social media, and, by the dynamics of Instagram, a platform for image production subject to the neoliberal ethos of productivity and consumption, interacting with her followers. The documentation of the performance resulted in an experimental writing project in the form of a website, available online between November 2023 and April 2024.

Escolhido por ser um título intraduzível, uma vez que “guaraná” é uma derivação da palavra “wara’ná”, da língua indígena sateré-mawé, e “paquera”, uma corruptela da palavra “paqueiro”, que nomeia o cão adestrado para caçar pacas, Guaraná Paquera, além de ser o nome de um popular refrigerante do Rio de Janeiro, também se relaciona à institucionalização das Cosmococas de Hélio Oiticica, que, nos museus, contrariando as instruções do artista, não apresentam cocaína em suas instalações. Em vez disso, há o que muitas vezes parece ser pó de guaraná, suscitando algumas discussões sobre transgressão, marginalidade e institucionalização na arte.
Guaraná Paquera — cujas iniciais, vale observar, são GP, abreviação popular para o termo “garota de programa” — é um registro da putaria de Mariana Destro, que tensiona narrativa, vida, ficção, criação e tanto as possibilidades quanto as implicações políticas da identidade na era digital.

Chosen for its resistance to translation, the title combines multiple layers of meaning. “Guaraná” derives from wara’ná, a word from the Sateré-Mawé language, while “paquera” is a corruption of paqueiro, the name given to a dog trained to hunt pacas. Beyond referring to a popular soft drink from Rio de Janeiro, Guaraná Paquera also alludes to the institutionalization of Hélio Oiticica’s Cosmococas. In museums, contrary to the artist’s instructions, the installations are presented without cocaine. In its place, one often finds what appears to be guaraná powder, prompting discussions around transgression, marginality, and institutionalization in art.
Guaraná Paquera—whose initials, GP, are also a common abbreviation for garota de programa (sex worker)—is a record of Mariana Destro’s putaria (whoreness). The work tensions narrative, life, fiction, creation, and both the possibilities and political implications of identity in the digital age.
